Linux Ballroom R.S.V.P.s
By Nick Mares of Dimensions Web Design
Dear friends, I am writing to share my experiences of Linux with you, and invite you to download my custom operating system based on the core Puppy Linux system, free to use of course. Windows is an insecure operating system plagued by security flaws which are continuously being fixed. Although this was the reason I originally switched from it to Linux, my appreciation of this miracle system today, is far greater than that. I bought a Puppy Linux boot CD from a helpful Ebay seller. Puppy is an intentionally minimalistic system designed for both maximum performance and compatibility with older hardware. I wondered just how far one could take such level of customization. As my web development coding and programming skills began to seep into my desktop environment I experienced both delight and frustration at the responsibility of having to manage and customize my own personal system. I was especially curious of the Gentoo Linux distribution, in which the entire system is compiled from the ground up, and the process can take days or even weeks before the system can be used. Such extreme involvement in building a system maximizes it to it's fullest potential in terms of performance on the given hardware. Apart from this Gentoo method, Puppy is an innovative operating system which also has one unique trait that allows it to surpass contemporary performance benchmarks: it can load it's entire operating system into RAM upon booting the computer. In the end I become proficient enough to combine both approaches, learning to compile programs in the Puppy Linux tradition, which is to strip out all bloat from it in the process. Such bloat can include any extensive documentation, features, and multilingual translations which might come included in the program itself. Over time I added these over the bare bones core of the Puppy Linux system, ending up with an operating system completely rebuilt from scratch, and fast beyond credibility. Pup 4 Pentiums was born. It will run on Pentium 4 or later processors and has also been confirmed to work on 64-bit architectures. Instructions: 1. Download the file: Pup 4 Pentiums 2. Burn it to a data CD with Roxio or similar 3. Boot the computer 4. Enjoy! Linux: Free to use A joy to develop |
